Sometimes with length nearing maximum the ends become worn and faded due to friction, sun exposure, etc. Of course that part of the hair may be 8 years old or more so I can understand the desire to trim it off to keep the ends fresher.

Also many girls earlier in their long hair journey they are not as scrupulous about haircare so that section may have not been cared for years ago when it was first growing.
